What is MELT?

The MELT Method is a self-care technique developed by manual therapist and connective tissue specialist Sue Hitzmann. It's a gentle, hands-on method that uses soft rollers and small balls to address the body's connective tissue (specifically the fascia) to reduce chronic pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall wellbeing.

The Problem It Addresses

Daily stress, repetitive movements, and even just sitting for long periods cause the fascia (the web of connective tissue surrounding every muscle, joint, and organ) to dehydrate and become stuck or compressed. This is what MELT calls "stuck stress," and it's a major contributor to chronic pain, stiffness, and joint problems, especially as we age.

How It Works

MELT uses light compression, gentle shearing, and rinsing techniques applied through rollers and balls to:

  • Rehydrate the connective tissue
  • Release tension and "unstick" the fascia
  • Decompress joints (especially the spine, hands, and feet)
  • Calm the nervous system

What a Session Looks Like

Sessions involve slow, deliberate movements, nothing aggressive or painful. Common sequences include foot and hand treatments, soft roller work along the spine and torso, and targeted joint decompression. Most people feel noticeably lighter, longer, and less achy after even a short session.

Who It's For

MELT is especially beneficial for people dealing with:

  • Chronic pain or stiffness
  • Joint issues (knees, hips, lower back, neck)
  • The effects of aging on mobility
  • Post-exercise recovery
  • It's accessible to nearly all fitness and mobility levels, including those who need a seated (chair-based) option.

How I discovered MELT

I lived with chronic sciatica for 15 years. Every day I felt that familiar nerve pain throbbing down my leg. After countless specialists and no real answers, I found MELT through a friend's recommendation. It was the first thing I could do at home that actually supported my body's healing without causing more pain.

MELT tools cost less than a single massage session, and you can use them at home anytime. I found myself needing fewer expensive treatments and actually feeling better. I became a certified instructor because I wanted to teach others what I had learned.

I know what it feels like to want your life back.

Gentle Self-Care

MELT is not exercise and not massage. It's a self-care practice you can do regularly to keep your connective tissue healthy, your joints mobile, and your nervous system balanced. Think of it as maintenance for the system that holds your body together.
