Repel Mosquitos with Essential Oils

Repel Mosquitos with Essential Oils

TerraShield® formerly known as the "outdoor blend" is new and improved! It is officially a proven mosquito repellent blend of essential oils in a Sesame seed carrier oil base.

The reformulated TerraShield® is an EPA registered "repellent blend" in the US and has tested at greater than 90% efficacy at more than four hours. With this natural repellent, you and your family can enjoy mosquito-free time in nature. The new Repellent Blend contains Citronella, Lemongrass, Thyme, Cedarwood, Geranium, and Peppermint essential oils in a Sesame Seed Oil base.

Cold Pressed Sesame oil as the carrier oil

This is diluted with cold pressed sesame seed oil. Cold pressed sesame oil is highly refined and removes most, if not all of the proteins. Therefore it is not considered an allergen by allergy experts. It is always a good idea to check with your doctor first if you have a sesame seed allergy or other concerns.

Directions for use:

There is a label on the bottle. I will admit I had to enlarge it quite a bit to read the directions. So I included them below.

Apply directly to desired areas before outdoor activity. Dispense 4-5 drops to hands at a time. Use just enough repellent to cover exposed skin and/or clothing. Spread the product evenly with hands if needed to cover all exposed skin.

REAPLY EVERY 4 HOURS AS NEEDED. This is safe for children. Do not allow children to handle this product or apply to children's hands. Apply to your own hands first and put it on the child. Do not apply to cuts, wounds, irritated or sunburned skin. After returning indoors, wash treated skin with soap and water.

TO APPLY TO FACE: Dispense 2-3 drops into hands first and then apply sparingly avoiding eyes. Do not apply directly to face. Do not apply near eyes and mouth. Apply sparingly around ears.

SAFE FOR DOGS: According to the Essential Oil Vet this formula (although has citronella) is safe for your dogs but not for small pets like cats and bunnies. You will want to apply to your hands first and pet your animal on the back of the neck.

ONE MORE TIP: How can you tell which Terrashield® blend you already have? The old blend is labeled "outdoor blend" and the new blend is labeled "repellent blend."

What's inside the new and improved repellent blend?
  • 79% Sesame oil
  • 6% Citronella oil
  • 6% Lemongrass oil
  • 4% Thyme oil
  • 3% Cedarwood oil
  • 1% Geranium oil
  • 1% Peppermint oil

Terrashield essential oil blend is diluted at 21% with sesame seed oil. This is a very safe dilution rate for most people including littles. To dilute the essential oil blend further simply add a few drops of essential oil to few drops of a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil, sesame oil, argan, jojoba, or avocado oil. Any vegetable based oil will work.

My favorite carrier oil is fractionated coconut oil FCO. "FCO" is odorless, stainless and greaseless. It absorbs nicely into the skin.

Do you prefer a spray repellent?

No problem! A spray repellent is also available. The 30ml TerraShield® spray is the perfect size to keep in my purse too. Cause when the bugs are out you don't want to be out of your mosquito repellent.

Is TerraShield® repellent blend safe for my pets?

I literally did a whole class last month on The Best Essential Oils for Summer and included a recipe to give the former Terrashield ® blend a boost. Guess what? No need to give the new blend a boost. There is one minor drawback. The new blend contains Citronella essential oil and is not safe for cats.

Terrashield ® is safe for dogs and horses. The safest way to apply this blend to your dog is to spray your hand first then pet the back of your dogs neck and run your hands down their chest and legs. You should not use this product on your dog if you are currently using another pest repellent or collar.

Another easy use is to soak your dogs collar in 4 ounces of water with 20-30 drops of repellent essential oil blend for about 20 minutes. Let it completely dry before placing the collar back on your pet. You can re-soak the pet collar every 2 weeks.
