The beautiful thing about essential oils is they are aromatic volatile compounds that can effect our mood in under 30 seconds when inhaled. When you smell an essential oil the compounds enter through your olfactory nerve and send messages to your limbic system.

Our limbic system is our emotional brain and it is also where our memories are stored. Depending on what you just smelled, that message could be calming, energizing, relaxing, soothing or get happy!

That same compound when inhaled enters our bloodstream through our lungs and therefore can have an effect on our entire body. For instance, when we inhale a calming essential oil like Lavender we can feel relaxed from head to toe.

Memories and Smells

Have you ever smelled something and instantly were overcome with sad feelings? This is a memory stored in your limbic system that is associated with that smell. But! This can also work to our advantage. Sometimes we smell something like an orange tree blossom and get a happy, warm, fuzzy feeling. This is a smell that has been stored in our limbic system and is associated with a positive feeling.

I have an example. I don't think they still make it but Ivory used to make a liquid dish soap. Growing up, our neighbor had liquid Ivory soap at their kitchen sink. We were over there a lot and every time I used that soap it took me back instantly to when I was in Shriner's Hospital. I was only five years old and don't remember using Ivory dish soap when I was in the hospital. But they must have used it in the early 1970's because the smell triggered that memory every single time. Crazy to think about how much smells effect us.

Let's Make a Mask Spray with essential oils

Because the compounds I smell are going directly to my brain, effecting my mood and entering my bloodstream I want to use pure therapeutic grade essential oils in my mask sprays.

  • 2 oz. spray bottle
  • 1 oz. with hazel
  • 1 oz. distilled water
  • 20 drops total essential oils
  • Shake and spray

If you are using a larger bottle like a 4 oz. size just double the recipe. When using citrus oils it is important to use a glass spray bottle. Citrus essential oils can break down plastic and leach toxins into your spray. You can find glass spray bottles on Amazon or my favorite online stores for essential oil accessories are Your Oil Tools or Holistic Oils.

The first two ingredients are 1 oz of distilled water and 1 oz. of witch hazel.  Use distilled water because we are not adding any preservatives to this mix. Witch hazel is an astringent and is great for your skin. It also acts as an emulsifier because water and oil do not mix and actually repel one another. An emulsifier is able to attach to oil and attach to water to help them mix up better. You will still want to shake your spray bottle before using.

Next we will add the essential oils. Here is where you can get a little creative. If you are looking for a calming spray the easy answer is Lavender. Not a fan of Lavender? You can try Frankincense, Cedarwood, Bergamot or Ylang Ylang.

Common concerns addressed with a mask spray

Respiratory Support

Want to feel energized and open up those airways but don't like Peppermint? Try Spearmint, Rosemary or Lemon. For respiratory support my favorite is Breathe respiratory blend of essential oils. You could add a drop to your palms and inhale before putting on your mask also. Take a few deep breaths and open up those airways. It's awesome!

Immune Support

Healthy Immune Function is a top concern this time of year. On Guard protective blend is a proprietary blend of essential oils that support our immune systems naturally. This blend includes oils such as Wild Orange, Cinnamon, Clove and Eucalyptus it smells great too!

Blemishes and Breakouts

Is your skin irritated and you are finding more blemishes wearing a mask? Tea Tree is helpful for calming down irritations and fighting blemishes and breakouts. I recommend you also spray this on your skin when it is freshly washed morning and night.

Seasonal Issues

If you are like me and suffer from seasonal threats every Spring and Fall this is a combo to try. Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint essential oils. We know Lavender is calming but it also has natural antihistamine properties. Lemon and Peppermint are uplifting and helpful for respiratory support. A little bonus is that Peppermint is high in menthol and has a cooling effect on our skin.
