How to use a diffuser
Refer to the directions with your specific diffuser. They are all a little different.
If you are using an ultrasonic diffuser (which is the most common), there will be a small pad on the bottom inside. That pad uses ultrasonic technology to disperse the oil and water into the air in tiny micro drops. This allows a small amount of essential oil to be dispersed over several hours.
Add the drops to the diffuser using a recipe below, add tap water to the fill line, replace the lid and turn it on.
Most diffusers have a few buttons: the light, on/off, time to run and intermittent setting. If you use intermittent setting the diffuser will run for a longer period of time. It will run for a few minutes then pause for a few minutes.
Tips: You do not need to use filtered water. If you go above the fill line the diffuser won't turn on. I have had diffusers that won't turn on if the lid isn't seated properly. It's also a good idea to clean your diffuser periodically (instructions below).

Holiday Diffuser Blend Recipes

My favorite recipe is Candy Cane Lane. I have an obsession with candy canes! I literally can't buy them because I eat too many.
Candy Cane Lane
- 2 drops Wintergreen
- 2 drops Peppermint
- 1 drop Spearmint
- 1 drop Cinnamon Bark
- 1 drop Madagascar Vanilla
Add the essential oil drops to your diffuser and fill to the water line with tap water. Turn it on and inhale this sweet holiday scent.
How to clean your diffuser
At least once a month you will want to clean your diffuser. If you notice it not running well you may have to clean more often. Add a little bit of vinegar to water and run the diffuser for a few minutes. You can also use a cotton swab dipped in vinegar to clean the ultrasonic pad and inside the corner areas. Dump the mixture out, rinse and wipe the diffuser dry. Easy peasy!
Pets and essential oils
Using common sense and being observant, it is absolutely safe to diffuse pure essential oils in your home if you have pets. I have also written a more in-depth blog post about pets and essential oils.
If you have pets, you want to leave the door open so that they can leave the room if they don't like the scent.
Never leave pets in an enclosed room with a diffuser running.
If you observe odd behavior while diffusing a particular oil simply stop diffusing the oil or use that oil in a room where your pet doesn't stay.
Keep your diffuser in an area where pets and children can't reach it. If it were to spill they wouldn't know not to drink the water.
Use the intermittent setting on your diffuser. Most diffusers have an intermittent setting where it will run for a few minutes and pause for a few minutes.
Where to buy pure essential oils
You will see some of these blends call for doTERRA blends. I use and recommend doTERRA because of their pure tested standard. Every drop of essential oil is tested for purity and contains only the essential oil.
The essential oil industry is not well regulated and most oils on the market today have added fillers, synthetics and added ingredients.
