Cleaning with essential oils

It’s that time of year… spring or fall cleaning. Cleaning with essential oils can be simple. With just a few supplies, you can make an everyday cleaning spray and clear out a little space under the sink. Here are some of my favorite swaps and recipes.

My Favorite Scents for Cleaning

This is a short list of some of my favorite oils to use when I’m cleaning.

• Lemon and Wild Orange have that fresh citrus scent I like in the kitchen.
• On Guard has a warm, spicy scent. I use the On Guard Cleaner Concentrate for everyday cleanups. It already contains the essential oil blend, so the spray is easy to mix.

• Tea Tree has a fresh, herbal scent if you prefer something different from citrus. For more ideas, see my post on How to Use Tea Tree Essential Oil.
  

Supplies to Keep on Hand

• Distilled white vinegar
• Baking soda
• Distilled water
• On Guard Cleaner Concentrate
• A clean spray bottle and a few washable cloths

All-Purpose Spray

I use this spray daily for little cleanups around the house. If you have pets, you know there’s always something to wipe up!

• 2 tablespoons On Guard Cleaner Concentrate
• 24 ounces water

Mix the concentrate and water in a bottle large enough to hold both. Spray and wipe on hard surfaces that are suitable for the cleaner. For a smaller batch, use 1 tablespoon of concentrate with 12 ounces of water. doTERRA’s mixing directions

My Easy Swap for Cleaning Wipes

If you’re a recovering big-brand wipe addict like myself, here’s an easy swap. Keep a stack of washable cloths next to your spray. When you need a wipe, dampen a cloth with the cleaner and toss it in the laundry when you’re done. I like that I can grab one whenever I need it.

Glass and Window Spray

Here’s my simple mix for plain glass that can be cleaned with vinegar.

• 1½ cups distilled white vinegar
• ½ cup distilled water

Mix in a spray bottle, spritz lightly, and wipe with a clean cloth.

Baking Soda Soft Scrub

For a sink or tub that could use a little extra attention, mix baking soda with just enough water to make a paste. Use a soft, damp cloth, then rinse the surface and wipe it clean. Check that the finish can handle a mild abrasive first.

Swap Dryer Sheets for Wool Dryer Balls

If you’re looking to use fewer laundry products, try plain wool dryer balls. Toss them in with your load and let them tumble with the clothes. It’s an easy swap to try the next time you run out of dryer sheets.

A Parmesan Lid Trick

The day we removed all the carpet in the house was the best day ever! I love my tile floors.

Here’s a little tip from my old carpet days. Save an empty Parmesan cheese lid. If it fits a glass Mason jar you already have, you’ve got yourself a shaker for the baking soda you keep with your cleaning supplies.
