Cleaning with essential oils is economical and simple. With just a few products you can replace all of your toxic cleaning products and they are just as effective.
Top Essential Oils for Cleaning
This is not an extensive list but some of my favorite oils to use for cleaning.
Citrus oils such as Lemon and Wild Orange are powerful cleansers and purifiers. They degrease, remove odor, sticky residue and purify the air.
On Guard protective essential oil blend is an all purpose and powerful cleanser for surfaces. Use on surfaces you are constantly touching such as yoga mat, phone, door knobs and great for travel.
Tea Tree is a powerful cleanser for the air, body and surfaces. It is great for cleaning make up brushes, shoes, pet leashes, etc...
When you need added cleansing power for dark, damp areas or spots that get neglected grab the Oregano and Clove essential oils.

Supplies for Cleaning with Essential Oils
Gather these supplies ahead of time and you will be prepared to clean anything.
- Distilled White Vinegar
- Baking soda
- Distilled water
- Essential oils
Replace Toxic Dryer Sheets
Dryer sheets have toxic chemicals that we absorb through our skin. For your health and hormones ditch the chemicals. An added bonus is dryer balls reduce the amount of drying time.
- Before placing clothes in the dryer spray the wool balls with a mixture of lavender essential oil and water.
- In a spray bottle add 30 drops of lavender (or your fave essential oil) and fill the rest with distilled water.
- Replace fabric softener in the rinse cycle with white vinegar and a drop of essential oil.
Glass & Window Cleaner Spray Recipe:
It is best to use glass or stainless steel when using citrus oils. Citrus essential oils are powerful and can break down plastic.
What you will need:
- 10 drops Lemon essential oil
- 1 1/2 Cups distilled white vinegar
- 1/2 cup distilled water
- 16 oz glass spray bottle
Directions: Add the Lemon essential oil, distilled white vinegar, and distilled water to the glass spray bottle. Shake and spray
All Purpose Spray:
It is best to use glass or stainless steel when using citrus oils. Citrus essential oils are powerful and can break down plastic. In this recipe you can use a premixed cleaner concentrate or essential oils. I use this spray daily for any clean-ups especially from our pets.
What you will need:
- 2 tbsp On Guard Cleaner Concentrate
- OR
- 10 drops On Guard protective blend essential oil
- 5 drops Lemon essential oil
- 16 oz glass spray bottle
Directions: Add to the glass spray bottle On Guard concentrate OR Lemon and On Guard essential oils and top off with distilled water. Shake and spray.
Soft scrub recipe:
It is best to use glass or stainless steel when using citrus oils. Citrus essential oils are powerful and can break down plastic.
What you will need:
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1-2 tbsp On Guard Cleaner Concentrate
- 3 drops Lemon essential oil
- glass dish
Directions: Mix together to create a creamy paste and use immediately. Use on sinks, tubs, tiles and glass stove tops.
Bathroom spray:
It is best to use glass or stainless steel when using citrus oils. Citrus essential oils are powerful and can break down plastic.
What you will need:
- 5 drops On Guard protective blend essential oil
- 5 drops Tea Tree essential oil
- 3 drops Oregano essential oil
- 1 tbsp baking soda
- 1 cup vinegar
- 1 cup distilled water
- 16 oz glass or stainless steel spray bottle
Directions: Add the ingredients to a glass or stainless steel spray bottle, shake and spray
Carpet refresher:
The day we removed all the carpet in the house was the best day ever! I love my tile floors but if you have carpet here is a natural refresher. TIP: Save an empty parmesan cheese lid and add it to a glass mason jar for a recycled container.
What you will need:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 15-20 drops Citrus essential oil such as lemon, grapefruit or wild orange.
- Glass jar with a sprinkle top
Directions: Mix together and allow to sit for 6-8 hours in a jar. Sprinkle over carpet and allow to sit for several hours up to overnight and vacuum it up.
